Ol Doinyo Lengai
Ol Doinyo Lengai in Tanzania is located in northern Tanzania in the Lake Natron region and is visited only by a select few brave enough to venture off the beaten path. It’s wild, it’s remote, and it’s hair-raisingly beautiful. Oldoinyo Lengai, known to the Maasai as “God’s Mountain,” sits at 2,890 meters above sea level and is spectacular.
It is the only active volcano on earth spewing carbonate lava. This type of lava is unique in that its temperature is about 5,000 degrees Celsius (half that of regular basalt lava) and its viscosity makes it almost as fluid as water.
Its steep slopes with ash and hard rock, as well as the heat, make it a physically demanding climb. The heat during the day often exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and we believe that the best time to climb is at night, when the temperature is lower. This allows for a more comfortable ascent and together with your specialized Maasai mountain guide you will witness the sunrise from the summit and the breathtaking views – to the north you will see the salt marshes of Lake Natron and in the distance the Kenyan border and to the east you will see Kilimanjaro and the Great Rift Valley, while to the south the Ngorongoro Highlands and the Ngorongoro Crater stretch out.
